Berlin (dpa) – The start of sales of the new Sony game console Playstation 5 overwhelmed online retailers on Thursday. Many prospective buyers only saw error messages.

“Since the Playstation 5 is only available online, the inquiries are currently overwhelming our servers,” said the electronics retailer chain Euronics. Even the world’s largest online retailer Amazon, which is also one of the leading cloud providers, repeatedly came up against technical limits and showed gamers “error code 503” instead of the coveted console.

When searching for “Playstation 5”, the electronics giants Saturn and MediaMarkt did not show the console itself, but only accessories or compatible games. With competitor Mediamax, the potential buyers didn’t even get that far. “Dear visitor, due to maintenance work, our website www.medimax.de is unfortunately currently not available”, it said succinctly.

The corona pandemic had fueled the demand for computer games in recent months. In addition, the Microsoft Xbox and Sony Playstation have been completely redesigned for the first time since 2013. In contrast to the situation seven years ago, it is no longer primarily about computer games that are sold on silver discs, but about the predominance of “cloud gaming”, ie the streaming of games from the Internet.

In Japan, according to the specialist magazine Famitsu, around 118,000 copies of the Playstation 5 were delivered within the first four days after sales began on November 12th. Sony was able to sell more than 300,000 copies of the Playstation 4 in early 2013. However, the Playstation was already being sold in other countries at that time, so that a larger contingent was available for Japan. In addition, Sony was also able to sell via stationary retail at the time, which was canceled this year due to the pandemic.
