Factors influencing the prognosis and severity of cases of COVID-19 are one of the current questions for scientists.

The second option would be located on chromosome 9, specifically in the gene that determines the blood group. Whereupon, eBlood group A would initially be associated with a 50% increased risk of needing respiratory support in the event of this infection.. Conversely, blood group O would provide a protective effect.

This guideline is in accordance with the coordinated study by Andre Franke, molecular geneticist at the University of Kiel (Germany), on the extra risk of people with type A blood.

The research was conducted at the European peak of the pandemic and a higher frequency of 26 genetic variants was identified in patients affected by respiratory failure.
