Cologne (dpa) – With the main theme “Playing into the future”, the computer and video game fair Gamescom is entering its first digital edition in the middle of the corona crisis.
Oliver Frese, Managing Director of Koelnmesse, announced to journalists that “the most innovative product in international trade fair”. The new digital approach should continue to be a core component of the fair, even if it can take place again with the public.
The central topic of the fair will be the new generation of consoles: Both Microsoft and Sony have announced new game consoles for the autumn. Initially, however, only the Xbox manufacturer was confirmed as a partner for Gamescom. Other large exhibitors include Bethesda, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Koch Media and Activision Blizzard, who were not present last year.
The platform “gamescom now” should become the central contact point for the content produced by partners and the trade fair itself. Participation is free of charge. With a registration you can put together your personal interests, it said.
The fair has also announced several central shows for the four-day period. Once again there will be the “Opening Night Live” with moderator Geoff Keighley, at which various announcements and trailers will be shown. Also planned is the “Awesome Indies” show for independent developers and the “Best of Show” event, which is to conclude the digital fair.
An important pillar for Gamescom are also external partners who are to create and transmit further content. A prominent example is the amalgamation of the three companies Rocket Beans, Freaks4U Gaming and Instinct3, which are supposed to report on the fair with their streamers and influencers under the name “Gamevasion”.
Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer, Minister of State for Digital Affairs Dorothee Bär (both CSU), Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet and Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker (both CDU) will take over the opening of the fair on August 28. The fair takes place from August 27th to 30th.
