Berlin (dpa / tmn) – Big changes are coming for gamers in autumn. A new generation of consoles is starting with the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X. It also brings many top-class games to the market. Five games that are well worth a look.
“Cyberpunk 2077”: complexity as a trademark
“Cyberpunk 2077” was supposed to be released in April, but the developer CD Projekt Red had to improve it. In a first test of the pre-release version you can see why. The game promises almost endless possibilities. Starting with an extensive character creation over a far-reaching system of main and secondary tasks up to the huge, detailed and neon-lit game world “Night City”: This game alone is extremely ambitious in its scope.
One should not expect less from the creators of “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”. But in the end, merging these options took a little extra time, according to the developers. However, and this is also noticeable when playing around: complexity is not saved. The possibilities to equip the character with talents and skills are diverse and go deep. But you can also tailor the character “V” to your own playing style.
“Cyberpunk 2077” is considered the hype of the year – and if the developers don’t allow themselves massive blunders after the three-hour preview, then rightly so. “Cyberpunk 2077” will be released on November 19th for Playstation 4 (PS4), Playstation 5 (PS5), Xbox One (XBO), Xbox Series X (XBSX), on Stadia and for Windows.
“Assassin’s Creed”: As Eivor in the Viking Land
“Assassin’s Creed” fills the dozen: In the twelfth part of the main series entitled “Valhalla”, gamers are taken to the 9th century. Eivor, a Viking who raids England with his colleagues, is controlled by the player. It remains optional whether Eivor should be male or female.
An important element of the game are the conquest battles recurring from the “Odyssey” part: Together with the Viking troops, an attack is made on the position of the opponents. In several sections, Eivor has to clear areas from opponents, tear down a goal with a battering ram and eventually defeat a particularly strong opponent in the end.
It works quite well in a preview version of the game – and feels a bit like the Ubisoft game “For Honor”. In the chaos of the battle, difficult tasks await Eivor, for example aggressively attacking berserkers. The Viking ship, which carries Eivor over rivers and the sea, also plays an important role. However, naval battles should not initially take place.
In the formula, the game series remains very true to itself: stealth gameplay, an open world and a believably shaped world in a historical setting. “Aassassin’s Creed Valhalla” will be released on November 17th for PS4, PS5, XBO, XBSX, Stadia and Windows.
“Star Wars Squadrons”: dogfights with starfighters
Back in the cockpit: With “Star Wars Squadrons” Electronic Arts focuses on the space battles from the well-known film series. In the “five against five” mode, the players control X-Wings, TIE-Fighter and other starfighters and fight each other in intense dogfights.
It is controlled directly from the cockpit from the first person perspective, which can even be experienced in virtual reality. Information about ammunition, the condition of the spaceship or the shield energy must also be read in the cockpit view, there are no additional displays, as is otherwise the case.
Fighting takes place with four spaceship classes, each with different qualities: fighters, interceptors, supporters and bombers. The players can personalize their spaceship in terms of equipment and appearance. There is also a single player mode, which is located after the movie “The Return of the Jedi”. Star Wars Squadrons is coming October 2 for PS4, XBO and Windows.
“Marvel’s Avengers”: With booms on the bad guys
Marvel’s film universe is getting more and more offshoots in interactive entertainment. The game by Square Enix, simply called “Marvel’s Avengers”, will tell a new story, but visually and in terms of content it adheres to the templates from films and comics. Especially in the character design of “Captain America”, “Black Widow”, “Iron Man” and Co you can see the strong connection to these.
In terms of play, it is quite classic: you slip into the role of a superhero and can play alone or team up with up to three other players. Then, with imposing effects and a lot of punch, the bad guys are punched in.
All heroes should play differently – of course: Hulk has different skills than Thor. Items are also collected and new skills are unlocked with which the respective character can be improved. “Marvel’s Avengers” will be released on September 4th for PS4, PS5, XBO, XBSX, Stadia and Windows.
“Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater”: nostalgia on the skateboard
“Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” has shaped a whole generation of gamers: skateboarding over ramps, sliding over bars, performing daring tricks – all on the hunt for the high score. But the quality of the series fell recently, critics tore up the “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5” released in 2015 because of errors, bleak looks and boring gameplay in the air.
The publisher Activision is now building on nostalgia with a remaster of the first two titles – combined in one game. The old levels are prepared graphically, and the soundtrack, which is important for many fans, finds its way into the remaster to a large extent. All the old game modes are also on deck, as are the professionals from back then.
At the same time, the features of both games are brought together. For example, you can now combine your tricks with the so-called manuals in the content of the first game. At the same time, Activision wants to build an online community with the game: The players can create their own skate parks, share them online and compete against others both on the sofa and via the Internet. “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remake” will be released on September 4th for PS4, XBO and Windows.
