Although brands like Xiaomi and Oppo have already patented smartphones with cameras under the screen, none are commercially available yet. That will change with the ZTE Axon 20 5G, scheduled to launch on September 1 in China.
This will be the first smartphone in the world to be sold with camera technology under the screen. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait until day 1, as official renders of the product have already emerged, as shared on the Chinese social network Weibo.

In addition to the front camera under the screen, the ZTE Axon 20 5G will integrate a biometric sensor located also under the screen. We have yet to know how well this system will work, with so much sensitive hardware under the screen. One thing is for sure, the cost of repairing the screen on this type of smartphone should be astronomical.
As soon as the ZTE Axon 20 5G is launched, it is likely that other brands will start to streamline their smartphone releases with cameras under the screen. It is possible that until the end of 2020, we will still see launches by Oppo or Xiaomi.
Expected ZTE Axon 20 5G specifications
- 6.9 inch OLED screen
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor
- 12 GB of RAM
- 256 GB of internal storage
- Rear camera: 64 MP + 8 MP + 2 MP + 2 MP main sensor
- 4120 mAh battery
- Android 10
Due to its processor, the ZTE Axon 20 5G cannot be considered a high-end device. Still, its features are quite interesting. It remains to be seen what prices ZTE will charge for this equipment and whether we will have a global version for international launch.
